Why menendez brothers killed parents

Comment sections were flooded with outrage over their conviction and links to learn more information about the case. There were million views on these videos. Right before my eyes, the army behind the Menendez Brothers grew stronger and louder with each passing second.

But who were these people? Frankly, they appear to overwhelmingly be kids. In researching this story, I reached out to dozens of TikTok users about the videos they were posting — and I could hardly find anyone over the age of eighteen. Could this be, in part, simply due to the audience that TikTok usually attracts?

Of course, yes. The demeanor these teenagers spoke with and the sheer amount of knowledge they had accumulated about a legally complex case was astounding.

Their youth only peeked through in their giddiness and excitement to help with my reporting. One TikTok user, eager to point me in the right direction, put me in a group chat with about ten other TikTok users who primarily used the social media site to create videos about the Menendez brothers or to connect with other supporters. I was soon flooded with messages from teens aged , complete with paragraphs-long sentiments about their beliefs. Most of it included complex legal jargon.

One of those very eloquent teenagers was an year-old girl named Janne from Germany. Like her characters in New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley publishes a passionate editorial calling on President Abraham Lincoln to declare emancipation for all enslaved people in Union-held territory.

Art, Literature, and Film History. Civil War. The story of Eric and Lyle Menendez is one of the most notorious true-crime sagas in American history, and the thirst for more and more depictions of the saga cannot be sated. Unlike other endlessly popular true-crime stories—JonBenet Ramsey, O. The brothers have admitted to killing their parents.

On August 19, their parents chartered a yacht and took them shark fishing. On August 20, they burst into the den of their home and discharged 15 shots into their parents while the couple was watching television on the couch. Then the brothers, who were 21 and 18 at the time, drove to a movie theater and bought tickets for Batman.

They tossed the guns and changed into clean, unbloodied clothes, before driving back to their house and pretending to discover the scene all over again. The brothers moved out of the family's Beverly Hills mansion and stayed in a series of expensive hotels before finally leasing condominiums on the water in Marina Del Rey.

Their adjoining apartments had ample room for parties and movie nights with friends. Erik bought a Rolex too, and clothes, and lost thousands of dollars gambling. He practiced up to 10 hours a day and flew to the Middle East to compete. Meanwhile, Lyle returned to Princeton, but not to attend classes. Instead he focused on business pursuits and shopping in the New Jersey and New York areas.

He hoped to turn it into a franchise. It was the first business under the umbrella of a company Lyle called Menendez Investment Enterprises. He hired two friends at Princeton to help oversee and advise on his investments, as they later testified, and foresaw a portfolio of restaurants, real estate, and like their father the entertainment industry.

In August , three years after the murders, the Supreme Court of California ruled that a recording of Lyle admitting the murder to Mr Oziel was admissible as evidence, due to Lyle threatening him, which voided doctor-patient privilege. The brothers were initially tried separately, and there was huge interest in the cases, as they were broadcast on live televison.

Their defence lawyer Leslie Abramson argued that Lyle and Erik had been consistently sexually and emotionally abused by their father, that their mother had allowed it to happen, and that this was the motivation behind the murders. The trial ended with both juries deadlocked, and an immediate retrial was ordered, this time with Lyle and Erik being tried together.

More than 20 years later, on 4 April , Lyle was moved to the same housing unit as Erik at the Richard J Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego County, allowing them to reunite for the first time.
